CALVIN ABE, FASLA
PRESIDENT
Calvin Abe brings to the firm over 20 years of professional experience in a wide range of landscape architectural and urban design projects. The scale, variety, and complexity of these projects have provided him with expertise in many project types, including civic spaces, parks, schools and institutions, single-family and multi-unit housing, large mixed-use commercial developments, corporate headquarters, and office parks.
Calvin Abe is noted for his ability to transform conceptual design ideas into creative and artful built forms. He is a team player and works closely with consulting architects and designers to formulate innovative and technically sound ideas.
Calvin Abe received his Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Design and his Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He established Calvin R. Abe Associates, Inc. (now AHBE) in 1987 and is a registered licensed Landscape Architect. In addition to his practice, Calvin Abe also teaches design in the Department of Landscape Architecture at UCLA Extension School, is a visiting critic at many Southern California schools, lectures nationally on design and landscape architecture, and participates in a wide range of organizations. He has served on the Boards of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Southern California Chapter and the Asian American Architects and Engineers Association, Southern California Chapter. Calvin Abe currently serves on the Board of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center.
MARTHA WILLIAMS, ASLA
PRINCIPAL
Martha Williams is a registered Landscape Architect who began professional practice in 1983. She is noted for thorough and well-considered project team coordination, her ability to complete projects in a timely and budget-conscious manner, and for maintaining long-term relationships with repeat clients. She has been a senior member at AHBE since 1993. She received her Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Florida.
Martha Williams has built numerous projects and continually develops innovative technical solutions to manifest complex conceptual design ideas. She also has extensive experience and expertise as a project manager and as a CAD manager.
BRIAN MITCHELL, RLA
PRINCIPAL
Brian Mitchell has been practicing in the profession for over thirty years. He has distinguished himself by becoming highly respected for his expertise in coordinating complex construction document packages and construction projects. This expertise has included a variety of project types such as public streetscapes and civic projects, institutional facilities, public parks and urban open spaces, as well as multi-family retail, commercial and resort projects.
Brian Mitchell is a registered Landscape Architect in the State of California. He has a certificate in Urban Planning from the University of California, Irvine, and received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
LINDA DALEY, ASLA
MANAGING PRINCIPAL
Since joining the firm, Linda Daley has been a leader in all aspects of the firm's practice, from business development and strategic planning, to project and studio management. Her project work has been diverse and she enjoys the challenges of projects involving collaboration with community groups or multi-jurisdictional stakeholders.
As Managing Principal, Linda is responsible for the firm's business development, accounting, financial, and human resource efforts. With her educational, business and landscape architecture experiences, Linda provides the business leadership qualities our firm needs to successfully realize our vision for the future.
KIKU KURAHASHI, ASLA
ASSOCIATE
Kiku Kurahashi has designed a wide range of projects in the commercial and public sectors. Her designs integrate her unique multi-disciplinary vision of public landscapes. Through her work on numerous streetscape and urban projects, she has acquired critical observation and decision-making skills that enable her to design with consideration of the natural environment and the social, cultural, and economic factors of individual communities. Her environmentally sensitive, consensus-building design approach and her compelling graphic communication skills are invaluable assets for community-based projects of any size or scope. Her success as a facilitator for numerous public design workshops and design review board presentations makes her a vital member of our studio.
Kiku Kurahashi received her Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She is the treasurer for the Association for Women in Architecture Los Angeles Chapter.
DONNA THOMPSON
ASSOCIATE
Donna Thompson brought sixteen years of accounting and managerial experience to AHBE when she started working here. Each day, she oversees all of the firm's general operations and accounts. Her persistence and attention to detail has made her an integral reason for our firm's success. Besides knowing what it takes to run our office, Donna's interest in design leads her to create ceramic art pieces. Her well-rounded perspective enables her to effectively manage the office on a day-to-day basis.
Donna Thompson received her Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Sociology, with a minor in Philosophy, from San Diego State University.
EVAN MATHER, ASLA
ASSOCIATE
Evan Mather brings twenty years of experience in landscape architecture, planning, and urban design projects to our firm. He is noted for his particular devotion to technological applications including the development of geographic information systems for neighborhood revitalization and design visualization for environmental impact reports.
Evan's project experience is focused on the public sector and includes parks, trails, streetscapes, schools, libraries, and various types of housing. His ability to bring clarity to complex design and project management challenges makes him a valuable part of our firm. Evan is also an award-winning short filmmaker.
He has his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University. He is also a registered Landscape Architect in the states of California and Washington.
MATILDE REYES
ASSOCIATE
Matilde Reyes has been involved with many different aspects of landscape architecture. Her extensive experience from design to management and execution spans across multiple project types from amusement parks to streetscapes to residential design. For public agencies, she has worked on city and county funded projects that involve both design and mitigation.
Matilde enjoys the challenge of creating a balanced eco system where wildlife and native vegetation may flourish. Her wide range of experiences makes her an asset on all projects, in which she participates with great interest and enthusiasm.
MEGAN HORN
ASSOCIATE
Megan Horn is an Associate and Lead Designer/Planner with AHBE Landscape Architects where she has worked on many complex projects, including the development of national and international master plans, urban streetscapes, parks, and outdoor environments for multi-family housing and institutions. She brings a comprehensive perspective to landscape design and planning that views the urban landscape as an infrastructure for supporting sustainable living. Because of her leadership and commitment in this area, AHBE has implemented unique strategies and solutions for creating open space, conserving water and restoring habitats throughout Southern California.
Megan resolves complex design issues by organizing a project's many considerations and synthesizing the information into clear, consistent and achievable strategies. Her approach to planning encompasses a range of methods and viewpoints, resulting in a completed plan that is both thorough and transformative.
Megan received her Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and holds a bachelor's degree in geography from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
